Wildflowers, etc. by: Shirley Pflederer

Wildflowers, etc. is a group in the Town of Rome who share interests in natural gardening and nature in general. All are welcome to come along with us as we explore and learn.

Friday, July 14th, we will be going to Mosquito Hill in New London for a program on Butterflies and Dragonflies. Meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Camelot Lodge to carpool. The cost is $2.75 per
person. Bring a sack lunch and dress for the weather.

Sat. Aug. 12th at 9:00 a.m. is our Purple Loosestrife Work Morning at the Walden Lake Beach Club. Park along the north side of "D" east of the entrance. Wear old clothes, bring gloves. We will be cutting, bagging and dabbing the Purple Loose-strife along the shoreline. Why do we keep at it? A single plant produces over a million seeds a season.

Looking ahead to September, this year we will go to the Necedah Whooping Crane Festival held on Sat., Sept. 16th. Admission is $2.00 per person.
Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Camelot Lodge to carpool.

We have had a busy time thus far this year. At our May plant exchange we made plans to work on an area at Lake Sherwood at the request of their
Conservation Committee. On Fri., June 2nd, our volunteers weeded and then planted about 125 plants. The next morning we were up and at it on a tour with John Kubisiac who took us on back roads and through private cranberry bog lands. We saw so many unusual plants, like Pink Lady Slippers and Pitcher Plants. Penn summed it up best, "I've seen their pictures in books but never thought I'd really see
them alive in their native habitat".
