ROME FIRE DEPARTMENT

I’m sure everyone is anxious for spring to arrive. I know I sure am. As spring approaches I would like to remind everyone of the dangers of outside fires. You will need a burning permit from the DNR to burn brush piles. You must follow all of their instructions and remember if the pile is still smoldering it is still burning!

On April 22nd we will be hosting our annual fire extinguisher clinic at Station #1 from 9:00am to 1:00pm. This is an excellent opportunity to have your fire extinguisher serviced at a reduced cost.

Recently I was advised that the Lake Camelot Association was asked to allow the storage of 100# propane tanks on lots where campers are used. My recommendation to you as your fire chief is not to do this. During the Cottonville fire we experienced the rupture of propane tanks. Even though they are designed with safety valves that are suppose to release the pressure when exposed to a fire there are times when the intensity of the fire is so great that the pressure can not be released fast enough and a rupture occurs. The other problem is if they are not stored properly the valve will not open. And when that valve does open the gas is released and ignites added more fuel to the fire. You also have to be concerned that vandalism may occur during the winter months when no one is around. The National Fire Protection Association and the National Propane Association state that propane tanks should never be stored inside a structure. I know that some of you do this but you are taking a big chance. If the tank leaks, that gas will seek an ignition source. Please consider the above when making your decision. I know that it is inconvenient for you to have this tank removed when your camper is removed but it is the safe thing to do.

Your Fire Department is still looking for new members. The department is made up of men and woman whose ages range from 18 to 66. The average age is 45. We now have 36 members and are looking to increase our membership to 40. We are now training on Monday night at 6:00 pm. We have make up training on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm and on Saturday at 9:00 am. We will supply you with all your equipment; send you to Mid State Technical College for your entry-level firefighter training and 1st responder training. You will be paid $10.00 an hour for training and special details, and $14.00 an hour for emergency calls. But more importantly you will have the satisfaction of helping your friends and neighbors in their time of need.

Stop by and see what we are all about.

                                                                                                              Yours in Fire Safety,
