 can be found here.  Some numbers from 2005 that we are very pleased to share include: 

-Total number of library cardholders in 2005 = 2,029 (increased from 1,739 in 2004).
-Total number of books borrowed in 2005 = 23,068 (increased from 20,145 in 2004).
-Of the 23,068 items borrowed, children checked out 3,475 items and 19,593 items by adults.
- Library patrons used the Internet 3,553 times (up from 2,932 in 2004).
-The library has 17,606 materials available to borrow (up from16,815 in 2004).
- 813 Items were borrowed from other system libraries through interlibrary loan (1005 in 2004).
- 134 Library sponsored individual reading programs were held (96 held in 2004).
- 197 Children in attended summer library reading programs (213 in 2004).
- 140 Adults in attended summer library reading programs (202 in 2004).
- 337 Total people attended 2005 summer library reading programs (a slight decrease from 415 in 2004, due to a change in program times).

- The library was open a total of 306 days in 2005.

     Our Volunteers have contributed over 1,741 hours assisting in the organization and operation of the library.  We are so very grateful for their time and talent; this library would not be what it is today without their help.

Valuable services provided by the Lester Public Library of Rome

Wireless Internet - The library has wireless internet!  This new service will be offered to library cardholders at no cost, hardware not included.

Local History - A local history of Rome is available as articles written by Rick Antin and reproduced from the Lake Arrowhead Lines Summer 2003 issues.  We also have copies of the “Nekoosa Story,” “From Past to Present – Adams County History,” and a handwritten account of the History of the Town of Rome 1854 - 1982 written by Charlotte Van Alstine. 

Books, Magazines, Newspaper, the Internet!  We have it all. - We carry all the new contemporary popular fiction from Romance, Mysteries, and Novels. We have 56 magazine subscriptions, 4 newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal, the Daily Tribune and the Adams County Reporter.  We have 5 public computer stations connected to a high-speed DSL internet access through WCTC. 

Children’s Collection - We now have over 5,000 children’s easy to read, picture books and chapters for ages preschool to young adult fiction.  Our children’s nonfiction area is rich in the sciences, arts and history.  Children’s audiocassettes with books has been added to our children’s area.  We have added 14+ reading kits for Birth to 3 years in our Early Literacy Project.  Parents or day care providers may borrow any of these kits.  The library has a nice selection of games and popular children’s magazines that are also available for borrowing.

Audio/Visual - Our Video collection consists of children and family videos to mature audience and nonfiction selections.  We now have over 800 in stock.  DVD’s have recently been added to our collection as well.  Books on cassette tape and CD are a popular item at the library with over 400 titles.  The library also accepts donations of any good used DVD, VHS, Books on cassette and Books on CDs and now Music CD’s. 

Reference- Need an answer to a question?  The library has many good resources available.  Our librarian can show you how to access numerous databases to gain the valuable information you may be looking for.  If you have a computer at home or one at the library, you can use “Ask Away” a free reference service can be accessed through the Internet, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Call or visit the library to learn more.  Currently we also have online databases that can be searched to find family heritage, magazine, newspaper and journal articles from years previous and from around the nation.

Interlibrary Loan - If we don’t have what you are looking for we can get it for you through our Interlibrary Loan service.  We receive delivery from Madison Central Library and some 65 libraries in a 6 county area of the South Central Library System three times a week.  If these libraries don’t have it we also have access to OCLC; a database that has available library materials from every library in the nation. 

Reserve Service - If one our popular books are not available when one of our patrons comes to check it out, we will gladly put their name on reserve for a particular book.  Another option would be e-mailing the library with a request.  Please include as much information as possible (author, title, publisher, copyright date, patron’s name and phone number).  We will try our very best to supply our patrons with whatever they are looking for.

Book Club Enthusiasts We have access to Book Group Discussion Book Kits which usually have 5 – 12 copies are a select list which come in a canvas bag, including discussion questions and information about each author in a folder for each collection.  Just stop in the library and ask for the Book List for Kits.

Library Book Club Members gather monthly to read and comment on various books of interest.  If anyone is interested in joining please contact Lore at the library.

Preschool Story Time Children ages 3 and up are invited to attend our preschool story hour each 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month from September through May.  Our programs offer storytelling, finger plays, flannel board stories, crafts, music and a snack.  Anyone needing special accommodations please call 2 weeks in advance (325-8990).

Youth & Family Programming – Area residents enjoyed Peter Fletcher, classical guitarist for New York City perform his new selections on guitar.  Computer classes were held on two different occasions this past fall offering beginner classes to anyone who asked.  Computer classes begin again in late April.  Summer Library Program begins in June.  Please share any future programming ideas with the library staff when you call or visit the Rome library.

Volunteer Opportunities - Our volunteer staff consists of numerous individuals from all walks of life to come to the library to assist with the daily operations of the library on varied schedules. The library welcomes volunteers to assist with processing and shelving books, customer service, Preschool story hour, special events, and numerous projects.  If you or someone you know is interested in learning what the library can do for you or what you can do for the library, please stop by or call us. 

Friends of the Library – The Friends of the library is an organization of volunteers that gather to help promote the library through special events throughout the year.  If you are interested in learning more about how to help your local library, please contact Lore at the library.  Collecting Campbell’s soup labels is an easy way to help

Photocopying, Faxing and Tax Forms too!

Our services include making photocopies, and faxing all your important papers.  The 2005 State and Federal tax forms are arriving daily and if we don’t have the form you need, we can get it from the IRS website at our library or at home by visiting www.irs.gov

You may also access the Wisconsin Department of Revenue for forms and information at this website http://www.dor.wi.state.us/html/formpub.html.  Again in 2006, AARP tax preparer volunteers will be holding tax preparation at the library; call for more information about dates and times of availability.
