Welcome to the "Sand Counties". Perhaps that phrase was
coined by Aldo Leopold. He wrote A Sand County Almanac which
was published in 1949. My sister-in-law encouraged me to read it when we
bought our Lake Camelot property back in 1978.
Adams County lies within an area in Central Wisconsin known as
the bed of Glacial Lake Wisconsin. It is also the place where the
prairie met the forest. Woodland and prairie plants mingle with sand
loving plants also found in places like the New Jersey “pine
barrens”.
One example is the blue-spiked Lupine that blooms in early June.
An endangered butterfly, the Karner Blue, depends on the Lupine in its
life cycle. When
Wildflowers, etc. was formed in 1999, we began by offering Lupine seeds
to persons interested in learning about the natural world of central
Wisconsin and landscaping with native plants.
We have found friendship and purpose by meeting others who share
our love of things native, visiting interesting places in the area and
working to keep the invasive Purple Loosestrife under control in the
Walden natural area of Lake Camelot.
As we gear up for the 2006 season, you are invited to participate
in any of our activities. Contact Barb Herreid at 325-2075 or Jack &
