LIBRARY NEWS FALL 2006

Summer Library Program

PAWS, CLAWS, SCALES & TALES was the theme for this summer’s Library Programming.  Students were entertained weekly by numerous performers that tickled the funny bones through song and stories about animals or intrigued us with awesome magic acts.  Parents and children learned a cool new craft that our area Town Hall Carvers shared through soap carving; this by far was the coolest craft we had all summer!  But the most amazing portion of the summer was the effort all the students and their families put forth in their commitment to reading.  Take a look at the numbers of books and time spent reading by our area youth.

Preschool/K category: Austin Sutherland read 52 books, Eva Klawitter 44 books, Kelli Spees 42 books, Adam Klawitter 37 books, Kaitlyn Smith 15 books, Savana Williamson 14 books, and Aidan O’Keefe read for 6 hours.

1st Grade category: Brad Strobel read 14 books, Natasha Pongratz read for 6 hours, and Morgan Anderson 31 books.

2nd Grade category: Hailey Smith read 35 books, Cassie Williamson 18 books, Kassi Spees read for 5 hours, and Brett Sutherland 3 books.

3rd Grade category: Hallie Anderson read19 books and Mackenzie O’Keefe read for 6 hours.

5th Grade category: Brett Pongratz read for15 hours 6th Grade category: Danielle O’Keefe read for 12 ½ hours, Nicole Smith read 8 books.

The Lester Library of Rome offers wireless internet service for those patrons who have laptops.  Login information is available at the library.

Library Flower Gardens - If you have visited the library this summer, you couldn’t help but notice the lovely plants and flowers in the gardens surrounding the library.  Our Master Gardeners have been working diligently to keep them looking well manicured and deerless.  Thank you all our Master Gardeners for their hard word and dedication to gardening at the library.

Book Bags - The library has new larger book bags for sale, courtesy of Charles & JoAnn Lester’s generous donation.  Help us meet our goal of providing new technology to the list of library services by purchasing a book bag.  For $10 they make great gifts for birthdays, a child’s first library visit or just to show how much you love your library.

Friends of the Library - If you would like to become a Friend of the Lester Public Library call the library to learn more.  The Friends are collecting Campbell soup labels; stop by the library and pickup a list of items that they collect.  Drop them off at the library anytime; it’s an easy way to support your public library.

Lester Public Library Foundation of Rome, Inc.

Did you know the library has outgrown its current building in short five years?  Due to the popularity of use we have seen the dramatic need for more services and space.  The Foundation is beginning to plan for the future by offering new ways to donate to the cause. Please join in the campaign, “Paving the Way to Growth and Learning,” by purchasing a commemorative brick or block for the wall for a donation of $100 each.
